Hi,

I think we have to try to drop Java as far as possible. In this perspective I have searched a JavaScript molecular editor similar to sketchel.
I have found JSME : JSME home page
In addition, it is easy to interact with the JSME Javascript applet through a javascript library. It is even possible to make JSME and JSmol interact going back and forth between 2D and 3D.
